A thoughtfully reimagined 1975 Yamaha XS650 has surfaced on Bring a Trailer, showcasing a comprehensive café racer conversion completed in 2005. Rather than preserving the motorcycle in factory specification, the builder transformed Yamaha’s legendary parallel-twin into a lightweight, vintage-inspired machine that combines classic British café racer styling with carefully selected mechanical upgrades aimed at improving reliability and riding performance.
The most noticeable changes are found in the motorcycle’s bodywork. A quarter fairing, café-style tail section with a bump seat, and a 1980 Suzuki GS450 fuel tank replace the original components, giving the XS650 a leaner, more purposeful profile. Finished in metallic silver, the revised bodywork is complemented by a clear windscreen, chrome turn signals, a black vinyl saddle, and a side stand that completes its period-inspired appearance.
Rolling stock has also been significantly upgraded. The motorcycle rides on lightweight 19-inch front and 18-inch rear Akront aluminum rims laced with durable stainless-steel spokes and wrapped in Bridgestone Battlax BT45 tires sized 100/90 up front and 120/90 at the rear. Suspension remains faithful to the XS650’s traditional layout with telescopic front forks and dual preload-adjustable rear shock absorbers, but handling has been enhanced through the addition of a fork brace, tapered roller steering-head bearings, and bronze swingarm bushings. Braking is handled by a front disc and rear drum arrangement, while an upgraded front brake master cylinder improves braking feel and control.
The cockpit retains classic Nippon Seiki instrumentation, including a 140-mph speedometer and a 10,000-rpm tachometer, accompanied by an Allied Electronics voltmeter for monitoring the electrical system. The odometer displays approximately 2,600 miles, representing the distance accumulated since the completion of the café racer build. As with the original model, there is no fuel level gauge.
Power comes from Yamaha’s air-cooled 653cc SOHC parallel-twin, which has received several performance and reliability enhancements. Upgrades include a Boyer Bransden electronic ignition system, pod air filters, an external oil cooler with stainless-steel braided lines, Harley-Davidson Sportster mufflers, and copper head bolt washers. The electric starter has also been removed, reinforcing the bike’s minimalist café racer philosophy while reducing weight.
A five-speed manual transmission and chain final drive deliver power to the rear wheel. Offered without reserve, this extensively modified XS650 presents an appealing opportunity for enthusiasts seeking a distinctive café racer that blends timeless styling with proven mechanical upgrades and the enduring character of one of Yamaha’s most celebrated twin-cylinder motorcycles.
