BMW R100: The Punk Rock Café Racer Built by Roughchild

Built with a rebellious “punk rock” brief

In the world of custom motorcycles, few machines capture attitude and craftsmanship quite like the BMW R100 café racer created by Roughchild. Built with a rebellious “punk rock” brief and transformed from a worn-out project into a stunning blacked-out masterpiece, this BMW airhead is more than just another custom build—it’s a deeply personal machine with soul, aggression, and purpose.

The story behind the bike makes it even more meaningful. The owner brought the motorcycle to builder Rob of Roughchild after it had fallen into disrepair. Originally built by one of the owner’s close friends who had since passed away, the bike carried emotional weight before the rebuild even began. Rather than simply restoring it, Roughchild evolved it into a sharper, faster, and more refined interpretation of the classic BMW R100 café racer.

Visually, the bike embraces a stealthy “black on black on black” aesthetic, but the closer you look, the more detail emerges. Every component feels intentional. From the handcrafted clip-ons and hidden switches to the machined triple clamps and polished engine fins, the build balances industrial brutality with elegant craftsmanship.

One of the standout modifications is the custom rear wheel setup. Roughchild engineered an offset-drilled 17-inch rear wheel to accommodate a massive 150-section Avon Spirit ST tire—something rarely seen in the BMW airhead world. To make it work, the drivetrain was shifted to center the wheel perfectly within the chassis. Combined with a shortened wheelbase and solid driveshaft conversion, the R100 gains a more aggressive stance and sharper handling characteristics.

Performance upgrades run throughout the motorcycle. SmartCarb SC3 carburetors dramatically improved airflow and throttle response, prompting a redesigned intake system featuring a custom airbox paired with a K&N filter. The result is a freer-breathing boxer engine with noticeably stronger performance.

The collaboration exhaust system with Mad Exhaust may be the bike’s defining feature. Constructed from stainless steel with pie-cut headers instead of traditional bends, the exhaust creates a raw mechanical aesthetic while delivering a soundtrack Rob compares to a Spitfire fighter plane. It perfectly matches the bike’s rebellious personality.

Suspension duties are handled by fully adjustable Öhlins shocks discreetly hidden beneath billet aluminum covers inspired by vintage BMW designs. Brembo GP4 calipers, a BMW R1200 front hub, and upgraded wheel components modernize braking and road feel without sacrificing the classic airhead identity.

Despite its aggressive café racer ergonomics, comfort wasn’t ignored. The handmade seat incorporates multiple foam densities, a gel insert, and Alcantara upholstery, making the bike surprisingly rideable for longer journeys.

What makes this BMW R100 special is not just the list of premium parts or meticulous fabrication. It’s the philosophy behind it. Roughchild didn’t build a museum piece—they built a loud, unapologetic, fast-riding machine that celebrates individuality. It’s mechanical punk rock distilled into two wheels, proving that custom motorcycles can still have personality in an era increasingly dominated by perfection.
