FOR SALE: 1981 Honda CBX Super Sport by CBX-Tras

Offered for sale on Bring a Trailer, this extensively reimagined 1981 Honda CBX Super Sport showcases what can be achieved when one of motorcycling’s most iconic six-cylinder platforms is paired with modern engineering and custom craftsmanship. Built by Michigan-based CBX-Tras, the project began as a complete teardown in 2019 before evolving into a highly modified restomod that blends classic Honda heritage with contemporary performance technology.

At the heart of the machine is Honda’s legendary air-cooled inline-six engine, which was comprehensively rebuilt and enlarged from its original displacement to 1,147cc through a 3mm overbore. During the rebuild, the engine received new internal components, including replacement camshafts, while a range of performance upgrades were incorporated to enhance reliability, cooling, and power delivery.

The revised powerplant features Keihin 29mm CR round-slide carburetors, K&N pod filters, an Ignitech programmable electronic ignition system, MP08 ignition coils, iridium spark plugs, and a high-output Denso alternator conversion. To further support the larger engine, CBX-Tras added a deep-sump oil pan with an extra quart of capacity, dual oil coolers, upgraded Vince & Hyde cam-chain tensioners, and a bespoke exhaust system terminating in modified Delkevic mufflers.

The chassis underwent an equally dramatic transformation. A single-sided swingarm and monoshock assembly sourced from a Ducati Hyperstrada were expertly integrated into the CBX frame, creating a striking modern rear-end design. Up front, the motorcycle adopts an inverted fork setup from a Suzuki GSX-R1000, bringing significantly improved handling and rigidity compared to the original configuration. Matching Ducati Hyperstrada wheels, finished in Sparkle Silver powder coating, are fitted with Shinko Verge tires measuring 120/70 at the front and 180/55 at the rear.

Braking performance was upgraded to contemporary superbike standards through the use of dual Brembo Monobloc radial front calipers gripping 320mm rotors, complemented by a rear single-piston caliper. Additional chassis enhancements include a steering damper, stainless-steel braided brake lines, and a Nissin radial front master cylinder.

Visually, the CBX strikes a balance between vintage inspiration and modern custom design. The modified fuel tank, bespoke side covers, and handcrafted tail section were refinished in Candy Glory Red over a heavily metallic base coat, while the frame and numerous mechanical components received satin-black powder coating. Engine covers were treated with a ceramic silver finish, creating a sharp contrast against the blacked-out cases.

Finishing touches include an Alcantara-trimmed solo seat, LED lighting, a Suzuki GS1150E headlamp, bar-end mirrors, and a Koso multifunction instrument cluster featuring a digital speedometer, analog tachometer, gear-position display, oil-temperature monitoring, shift light, and over-rev warning. Power is delivered to the rear wheel through a multi-plate clutch, five-speed transmission, and chain final drive, completing a remarkable reinterpretation of Honda’s celebrated six-cylinder superbike.
