A reimagined 1980 BMW R100

Roughchild returns with a purpose-built machine that favors function over flash. Dubbed the “Freeway Flier,” this latest project documents the transformation of a 1980 BMW R100 into a refined long-distance café racer, blending performance upgrades with practical touring sensibilities.

The donor bike’s significance lies in its transitional engineering—BMW’s early update to the engine and gearbox, while still retaining the signature heavy flywheel. Rather than discard this characteristic, the build leans into it. Paired with taller gearing and a sintered race clutch, the setup delivers smooth, sustained power ideal for highway cruising.

At the heart of the build is a 1070cc big bore kit, complemented by Euro-spec big port, big valve heads, twin-plug ignition, and modern smart carburetors. A Hoske-style exhaust system was selected not just for its distinctive tone, but for its length, accommodating the bike’s full subframe and integrated luggage.

Practicality plays a central role throughout. Period-correct Wixom saddlebags have been carefully reworked, now fixed and hardwired into the bike. Their original red lighting has been replaced with amber units that double as turn signals, subtly modernizing the design while preserving vintage character.

One of the build’s standout features is the 1972 “toaster” fuel tank, finished in Polaris silver. A long-kept piece, it ties the project together visually, bridging past and present. Suspension and braking are upgraded with Öhlins components and wave rotors, while a contemporary gauge cluster introduces GPS-based speed and electronic readouts within a retro-inspired layout.

Despite its performance enhancements—including a sport cam and lightweight internals—the Freeway Flier resists excess. It remains grounded, retaining its full-length subframe, seat, and touring capability. The result is a mature, well-balanced machine—built not just to be seen, but to be ridden.
