A meticulously reimagined 1977 BMW R100/7 has surfaced on Bring a Trailer, showcasing an impressive fusion of vintage German engineering and modern custom craftsmanship. Built by Magnum Opus Customs of Wilmington, North Carolina, in 2020, the motorcycle transforms BMW’s iconic air-cooled boxer platform into a contemporary café racer with scrambler influences, combining upgraded suspension, braking, and electronics with timeless styling.
The original fuel tank received a striking Polaris Metallic finish, while the frame was sandblasted, modified with a hoop-style rear subframe, and powder-coated in black for added durability and a cleaner aesthetic. Complementing the fresh paintwork is a handcrafted tan leather two-up seat, paired with LED lighting, including a compact taillight and front indicators integrated neatly around the fork tubes. A Motodemic 7-inch LED headlight gives the motorcycle a modern lighting signature without compromising its classic proportions.
One of the most significant mechanical upgrades is the installation of a Suzuki GSX-R front end. The inverted fork dramatically improves handling while dual radial-mounted brake calipers gripping wave rotors provide braking performance well beyond the capabilities of the original setup. Matching the upgraded suspension are black powder-coated alloy wheels measuring 17 inches up front and 18 inches at the rear, wrapped in Avon TrailRider tires sized 120/70 and 120/80 respectively. Adjustable rear shocks further enhance ride quality and chassis control.
The cockpit combines classic café racer ergonomics with modern functionality. Clip-on handlebars are equipped with Oxford bar-end mirrors, premium Renard switchgear, and a Brembo front brake master cylinder. Instrumentation comes courtesy of a GPS-based speedometer capable of displaying speeds up to 140 mph. Although the digital odometer reportedly reset itself before electrical updates were completed, the wiring system has since been revised to address the issue.
Power remains faithful to BMW’s renowned airhead architecture. The 980cc horizontally opposed twin-cylinder engine has been upgraded with Mikuni VM34 carburetors, pod air filters, and a stainless-steel dual exhaust terminating in reverse-cone megaphone mufflers for improved breathing and a more aggressive soundtrack. The engine continues to send power through BMW’s dependable five-speed manual gearbox and enclosed shaft-drive system, preserving the durability and low-maintenance characteristics that made the R100/7 a favorite among enthusiasts.
Blending modern sportbike components with classic boxer reliability, this custom BMW represents an expertly executed reinterpretation of one of the marque’s most celebrated motorcycles, offering contemporary performance while retaining the unmistakable character of the original Airhead.
