Bike of the Day: 1977 Kawasaki KZ650 Cafe Racer

A properly executed Japanese cafe racer

There is something timeless about a properly executed Japanese cafe racer, and this custom-built Kawasaki KZ650 captures that spirit perfectly. Based on the highly respected 1970s Kawasaki platform, this machine combines vintage engineering with handcrafted detailing and a purposeful stripped-back aesthetic that feels both authentic and distinctive.

Originally rebuilt from the ground up in 2014 by Nick Gale Custom Cycles in Wembley, the motorcycle underwent a comprehensive transformation that included a full engine strip and rebuild. At the heart of the build sits Kawasaki’s naturally aspirated 650cc inline-four engine, an iconic powerplant known for its smooth delivery, reliability, and unmistakable character. Paired with a manual transmission, the setup provides the kind of engaging riding experience that made the KZ650 such a favorite among enthusiasts and custom builders alike.

Visually, the bike strikes a careful balance between aggression and elegance. The custom black and silver paint scheme gives the machine a clean and understated presence, while the bespoke fuel tank adds a handcrafted touch. A chrome Le Mans-style filler cap further reinforces the bike’s classic endurance-racing inspiration. The black leatherette-trimmed seat pad flows seamlessly into the minimalist tail section, helping create the lean silhouette every great cafe racer demands.

One of the standout elements of the build is its incredibly clean profile. Hidden electrics and battery components tucked beneath the seat allow the frame to remain visually open, giving the motorcycle a lightweight “see-through” appearance that highlights the craftsmanship involved in the conversion.

The bike rides on cross-spoke wire wheels with chrome rims wrapped in period-correct Avon tyres, adding both authenticity and visual contrast against the dark bodywork. Lowered handlebars and revised controls sharpen the riding position, putting the rider in a classic cafe racer stance designed for spirited backroad riding.

Perhaps the most memorable feature, however, is the bespoke exhaust system. The four chrome tapering pipes not only define the bike’s appearance but also produce a distinctive soundtrack that perfectly complements the inline-four engine’s vintage performance character.

Additional touches such as revised rear springs, chrome mirrors, and electric start functionality make this custom Kawasaki as usable as it is stylish. Altogether, it is a thoughtfully executed build that pays tribute to the golden era of Japanese motorcycles while delivering the individuality and craftsmanship modern enthusiasts crave.
