The aftermarket superbike scene has produced no shortage of radical interpretations of the BMW S1000RR, but few are as comprehensively executed or historically significant as the 2011 Wunderlich “MADUSA” currently offered on Bring a Trailer.
Built in 2012 by William Plam of Wunderlich America in Hendersonville, North Carolina, the machine served as a rolling product showcase for the German performance specialist and paid tribute to Wunderlich’s earlier “MAD MAX” concept while emphasizing its American assembly origins.
Finished in satin black with exposed carbon-fiber trim, MADUSA transforms BMW’s already aggressive liter-bike into a purpose-built streetfighter with unmistakable presence. A Piranha headlight fairing incorporating a ram-air inlet, ellipsoid projector headlight, and LED parking light gives the bike a sharply modern appearance.
Additional Wunderlich components—including Aktivkomfort seating, RR-Vario adjustable rear sets, folding passenger pegs, and a black-anodized chin spoiler—underscore the project’s premium engineering focus. Its significance within the custom motorcycle community was cemented by a feature appearance on the cover of the February 2012 issue of Cycle World in an article written by Editor-in-Chief Mark Hoyer.
Performance upgrades are equally substantial. Öhlins FRRT 811 suspension components front and rear, dual Lucas Wave brake discs paired with Brembo calipers, and an Öhlins steering damper elevate chassis precision beyond the already capable factory platform.
Power comes from BMW’s liquid-cooled 999cc inline-four, featuring electronic fuel injection, shift-assist, and a Remus titanium exhaust system capped with a carbon-fiber HexaCone silencer. Combined with lightweight carbon-fiber detailing and aggressive ergonomics, MADUSA represents an expertly curated fusion of German superbike engineering and bespoke American customization.
