The Buell Super Cruiser platform has already attracted attention for its aggressive performance numbers and modern American V-twin engineering, but the company’s latest custom build reveals just how versatile the platform can become in the hands of talented builders.
Buell Motorcycles recently unveiled a one-off Super Cruiser Cafe Racer concept, transforming the already potent performance cruiser into a low-slung, track-inspired machine that blends modern superbike engineering with classic cafe racer styling. The custom project was developed internally by Buell’s factory team, showcasing the kind of bespoke designs owners can create using the adaptable Super Cruiser platform as a foundation.
The result is a motorcycle that looks equally ready for canyon carving, track-day duty, or coffee-shop parking lot admiration.
A Factory-Built Custom With Track-Focused Intent
According to Buell, the idea for the project originated roughly a year ago when the team began discussing how the Super Cruiser chassis could evolve into a dedicated cafe racer. The company wanted to demonstrate that the motorcycle’s lightweight architecture and 175-horsepower engine could support far more than a traditional cruiser configuration.
The stock Super Cruiser already delivers serious performance credentials, but Buell’s engineers believed a revised suspension setup, altered ergonomics, and race-inspired components could completely redefine the bike’s personality.
Rather than turning the concept into a future production model, Buell approached the project as a factory custom — a showcase intended to inspire owners and builders interested in personalizing their own motorcycles.
Race-Inspired Styling Meets Modern Engineering
One of the most visually striking features of the build is its return to Buell’s iconic perimeter front brake system. The custom setup uses a large perimeter rotor paired with a distinctive red Buell eight-piston caliper, reinforcing the motorcycle’s aggressive racing character while paying tribute to the brand’s engineering heritage.
The suspension system received extensive upgrades as well. The team equipped the bike with shortened Öhlins race suspension components, including a revised front setup and a premium rear shock designed to sharpen handling characteristics and improve track capability.
The riding position was dramatically altered through the addition of classic Clubman handlebars. Mounted directly into the triple clamps, the bars place the rider in a lower, more aggressive stance typical of traditional cafe racers. Combined with the revised suspension geometry, the setup transforms the Super Cruiser from a relaxed muscle cruiser into a focused sport machine.
An Öhlins steering stabilizer was also added to enhance front-end stability during aggressive riding.
Custom Cooling System and Lightweight Details
Buell’s team didn’t stop with cosmetic modifications. The motorcycle also received functional engineering changes designed specifically for performance riding.
The front radiator arrangement was reworked to improve wheel clearance. Instead of the standard layout, the custom build uses side-mounted Hammerhead race radiators positioned alongside the frame. The redesign not only improves packaging for the cafe racer stance but also adds a unique visual signature rarely seen on American V-twin motorcycles.
Additional lightweight and premium details include a crushed carbon top section and a custom-machined Asado gas cap. These touches further emphasize the handcrafted nature of the project. The bike retains the original Super Cruiser Memphis Shades fairing but pairs it with a Baja Designs headlight setup that gives the machine a sharper, more modern appearance.
The rear section of the motorcycle underwent substantial customization as well. Buell modified the seat pan entirely to accommodate a bespoke seat design tailored specifically for the cafe racer concept. The tail section incorporates a compact lighting setup using a vintage-inspired XV-style rear light, helping preserve the minimalist silhouette expected from a proper cafe racer build. The finished rear profile looks considerably leaner and more aggressive than the standard Super Cruiser, further reinforcing the bike’s sport-oriented transformation.
Built to Perform on the Track
Performance remained a primary focus throughout the build process. The custom Super Cruiser Cafe Racer rides on race slick tires and features a Square One race exhaust system designed to maximize both sound and performance.
Buell described the exhaust as “meaty and loud,” characteristics that align perfectly with the project’s uncompromising race-bike personality. The combination of lightweight construction, high-output V-twin power, premium suspension, and track-oriented ergonomics gives the custom build performance credentials that extend well beyond visual appeal.
While Buell did not release official performance figures specific to the concept, the underlying Super Cruiser platform’s 175-horsepower output suggests this custom machine would deliver superbike-level acceleration combined with a far more visceral riding experience.
Not a Production Model — But a Blueprint for Owners
Despite the overwhelming interest likely generated by the concept, Buell made it clear that this cafe racer will remain a factory custom rather than entering production.
The company emphasized that the build serves as an example of what owners can achieve using the Super Cruiser platform. Buell intentionally designed the motorcycle to support extensive customization, allowing riders to create everything from cafe racers and race bikes to baggers and touring-oriented customs.
The production version of the Super Cruiser remains available for purchase, giving enthusiasts a starting point for their own personalized builds. Buell also encouraged owners to share their custom creations online using the hashtag #MySuperCruiser, hinting at future community-focused customization initiatives planned by the company.
