Sunday the 7th of November was the date for this years Mods vs Rockers ride in Melbourne. It was my first time attending the event after moving to Melbourne from Perth and I wasn’t sure what to expect. I arrived at the South Brighton Baths expecting a group of 50 or so eager enthusiasts and instead pulled in to a car park filled almost to capacity with 200+ motorcycles and scooters and around 400 people.

The event is organised each year by the Melbourne branch of the 59 club, the Melbourne Crusaders scooter club and Kustom Lane Art Gallery. Unlike the original Mods vs Rockers clashes in the UK the mood was cheery and the only rivalry was a tug-o-war to decide which side would take the trophy to claim dominance for the year…and thankfully the Rockers won.

Triumphs dominated the numbers with plenty new Bonnies and Thruxtons in attendance but it was the vintage and traditional Cafe Racers that were getting all the attention. Stunning examples from BMW, Moto Guzzi, Laverda, BSA,  AJS, Norton and even a handful of Vincents were on display and were fired up for the ride from South Brighton to Kustom Lane Gallery in Hawthorn. I took my camera along and snapped a few shots of my favorites.

These 2 BMW Cafe Racers drew a lot of attention. The first was an immaculate example while the second was more of a rat. It featured a mix of old and new technologies with a front mounted oil cooler and sports muffler. I rode most of the way to the gallery behind this bike, it’s bodywork was so minimal it almost looked like he was just riding an engine with wheels. The gaffa tape holding the seat in place was also a nice touch.

A 1927 Model S BSA Sports Special. This bike outputs 4.93 horses! I didn’t see it during the ride but as far as I know it was ridden to the event.

A Norvin! I certainly wasn’t expecting to see this.

All up there were 4 or 5 Vincent powered machines in attendance and a couple of them were daily riders. These days a good example of one of these can go for around $60,000!

This last Vincent was the stand out motorcycle of the day for me. I only managed to snap these 2 shots before we all hit the road and unfortunately didn’t see it again. I’m going to be keeping an eye out for this bike at future events to get more details about its build.

All proceeds from the event went to supporting OZ Child, a great cause for Aussie kids in need.
