Mad Max Kawasaki KZ1000

Mad Max was and still is one of the best car chase/post apocalyptic movies ever made and in 1979 the film played a huge part in launching Mel Gibson's acting career. Mel went on to feature in Mad Max parts 2 and 3 (with Tina Turner!!!) but neither had the same appeal as the first which to this day has a huge cult following.

The first Mad Max movie featured a plethora of cool petrol powered vehicles including a gang of insane motorcyclists who terrorise and murder innocent people such as Max's wife and child. This of course sounds horrible...and it is... but the motorcycles are pretty darn cool and probably the largest collection of Cafe Racers styled bikes you will find in any film ever made.

But it's not only the bad guys who had cool motorcycles. Goose, Max's mate and fellow officer of the law is a bike cop who rides a seriously cool "Kwaka" which was a 1977 Kawasaki KZ1000 with true Cafe Racer appeal.

Goose rides the bike hard and the scenes featuring him on his bike are some of the best in the film.

In one scene Goose lays a huge skid out the front of the police station and in another he runs out of a cafe to join a high speed pursuit which has just flown by. As he jumps on to his bike and makes chase he fish tails the bike in some dirt at the roads edge. I can clearly remember these two scenes as being a defining moment in the development of my passion for motorcycles. The bike not only looked cool but it sounded cool and went hard as hell. But this guy has taken it to the next level...

Here we are in Japan at the 2009 Mooneyes 4th annual Motorcycle Swapmeet. Our friend here has built his very own MFP themed, Goose look-a-like bike.

After seeing this image I did a bit more searching and it seems he's not the only Japanese guy who has one. Infact there's a website devoted to Goose and his mighty Kwaka called z1000 Goose (in Japanese). The site features parts for the KZ1000 and even shows how individuals created their own versions of Gooses Mad Max Cafe Racer.

If you look to the UK website Z-Power you will also find photos and documented builds of other peoples Mad Max KZ1000 replicas such as the ones below. Maybe this could be a future project for me?
